Darwin was born in 1731 in Elston, Nottinghamshire. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University and then practiced medicine in Stafford and Shrewsbury. In 1766, he published Zoonomia, or the Laws of Organic Life, which was a major work on evolution and natural history. In this book, Darwin argued that all living things are descended from a common ancestor and that they have evolved over time through a process of natural selection.

Darwin's work was controversial at the time, but it had a profound influence on the development of evolutionary theory. Charles Darwin, Erasmus's grandson, acknowledged his grandfather's influence on his own theory of evolution by natural selection. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, was also a great admirer of Darwin's work. He wrote to Darwin in 1787, saying, "Your Zoonomia is one of the books which I read with most pleasure and instruction." Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the English poet and philosopher, was also a great admirer of Darwin's work. He wrote to Darwin in 1803, saying, "Your Zoonomia is a work of immense genius."

In addition to his work on evolution, Darwin was also a pioneer in the field of natural history. He published several books on botany, zoology, and geology. He also invented a number of medical devices, including a breathing apparatus and a artificial limb.

Darwin was a man of great intellect and achievement. He was a pioneer in the fields of evolution and natural history, and his work had a profound influence on the development of these fields. He was also a gifted poet and inventor. Erasmus Darwin was a true polymath, and his life and work is a testament to the power of human curiosity and creativity.
