Captain James Cook was one of the greatest explorers in history. His voyages across the Pacific Ocean in the 18th century changed the world's understanding of geography and science. This book tells the story of Cook's life and adventures, from his early years in Yorkshire to his tragic death in Hawaii.
Early Life and Career
James Cook was born in Marton, Yorkshire, England, in 1728. His father was a farm laborer, and his mother was a housewife. Cook had little formal education, but he was a bright and curious child. He loved to read and learn about the world around him.
At the age of 18, Cook joined the Royal Navy. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by the age of 26, he was a captain. In 1768, Cook was given command of the HMS Endeavour and sent on a voyage to the Pacific Ocean to observe the transit of Venus. This was a major scientific event, and Cook's mission was to gather data that would help astronomers better understand the solar system.
Voyages of Discovery
Cook's first voyage was a great success. He successfully observed the transit of Venus, and he also made a number of important discoveries. He charted the coast of New Zealand, and he became the first European to land on the east coast of Australia. Cook named the continent New South Wales.
Cook's second voyage was even more ambitious. He set out in 1772 with two ships, the HMS Resolution and the HMS Adventure. Cook's goal was to find a passage through the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. He explored the Antarctic Circle, and he discovered a number of new islands. However, he did not find a passage through the Pacific Ocean.
Cook's third voyage was his last. He set out in 1776 with two ships, the HMS Resolution and the HMS Discovery. Cook's goal was to find a Northwest Passage through the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. He explored the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean, but he did not find a Northwest Passage. Cook was killed in Hawaii in 1779 by a group of natives.
