Jenkins' story begins in the 1970s, when his family moved from the South Side of Chicago to the affluent suburb of Winnetka, Illinois. Jenkins was the only black student in his elementary school, and he quickly became the target of racist jokes and insults. He was also ostracized by the white students, who saw him as an outsider.
Jenkins' experiences in Winnetka shaped his view of the world. He learned that racism was not just something that happened in the South; it was also alive and well in the North. He also learned that class could be just as divisive as race. The white students in Winnetka were from wealthy families, and they looked down on Jenkins because he was from a poor family.
Despite the challenges he faced, Jenkins refused to give up on his dreams. He went on to attend Yale University and Harvard Law School. After graduating from law school, Jenkins worked as a lawyer for the Legal Aid Society, where he fought for the rights of the poor and disadvantaged.
In 2016, Jenkins published Black Prep Life. The book has been praised for its honesty, vulnerability, and insights into race and class in America. Jenkins' story is a reminder that racism and classism are still major problems in our society, but it is also a story of hope and resilience.
