Early Life and Career

Roberto Clemente Walker was born on August 18, 1934, in Barrio San Antón, Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of seven children in a poor family. His father, Melchor Clemente, was a sugar cane worker, and his mother, Luisa Walker, was a homemaker.

Clemente showed an interest in baseball at an early age. He would often play with his brothers and friends in the streets of Carolina. When he was 18 years old, he signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization.

Clemente spent three seasons in the minors before making his MLB debut with the Pirates in 1955. He quickly became one of the best hitters in the league, and he helped the Pirates win their first World Series championship in 35 years in 1960.

Clemente was a versatile player who could hit for average, power, and speed. He was also an excellent fielder with a strong arm. He led the National League in batting three times (1961, 1964, and 1967),and he also led the league in hits four times (1961, 1964, 1967, and 1969).

Clemente was a key member of the Pirates' 1960 and 1971 World Series championship teams. In the 1960 World Series, he batted .310 with two home runs and six RBIs. In the 1971 World Series, he batted .414 with one home run and four RBIs.

Clemente won the National League MVP award in 1966 after leading the league in batting (.357),hits (202),and runs (119). He also won 12 Gold Glove awards for his outstanding fielding.

Humanitarian Work

Clemente was more than just a baseball player. He was also a humanitarian who was dedicated to helping others. He founded the Roberto Clemente Foundation in 1964 to provide assistance to people in need.

Clemente's foundation provided food, clothing, and medical supplies to people in Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the United States. He also helped to build schools and hospitals in these areas.
