The novel begins in 1861, as the Civil War erupts. Grace Trevelyan is a young woman from a wealthy plantation family. After the war, Grace moves to Atlanta, where she meets a former slave named Robert. Robert is a kind and intelligent man, but he is also a victim of the racism that is rampant in the South. Grace and Robert fall in love, but their relationship is forbidden. They must keep their love a secret, or they will face the wrath of society.
Grace and Robert's daughter, Sarah, is born in 1875. Sarah grows up in a world that is still divided by race. She sees the injustices that her father faces, and she vows to fight for a better future.
