Early Life and Career

Robert Fortune was born in Berwickshire, Scotland, in 1812. He showed an early interest in botany, and at the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a gardener at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. After completing his apprenticeship, Fortune worked as a gardener at several estates in Scotland and England.

In 1843, Fortune was hired by the Royal Horticultural Society to travel to China to collect new plants. He made three expeditions to China, between 1843 and 1855, and he introduced over 500 new plants to the West. Among his most important s were the tea plant, the chrysanthemum, and the camellia.
