A Witty Guide to the Quirks and Charms of Office Life
If you're a secretary, you know that the job can be both rewarding and challenging. There are days when you feel like you're the glue that holds the office together, and days when you just want to pull your hair out. But one thing is for sure: there's never a dull moment.
In The Lighter Side of Your Secretarial Career, author and former secretary Doris Day shares her hilarious observations on the lighter side of office life. From the boss who can't remember his own name to the coworker who always brings in questionable baked goods, Day captures the unique quirks and charms of the secretarial profession.
With wit and warmth, Day explores the challenges and rewards of being a secretary. She offers tips on how to deal with difficult bosses, manage your time effectively, and keep your sanity in the midst of office chaos. But most importantly, she reminds us that even in the most stressful of times, there's always room for laughter.
Chapter 1: The Boss from Hell
We've all had that one boss who makes us want to scream. The one who can't remember his own name, who micromanages your every move, or who is just plain mean. But as Day points out, even the most difficult bosses have their moments of absurdity.
One of Day's most memorable bosses was a man named Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was a classic case of a micromanager. He would hover over Day's desk, watching her every move. One day, Day was typing a letter when Mr. Smith suddenly leaned over her shoulder and said, "That's not how you type a comma."
Day was so startled that she jumped out of her chair. "Excuse me?" she said.
"You're putting the comma in the wrong place," Mr. Smith said. "It should go after the word 'Dear.'"
Day looked at the letter. She had indeed put the comma in the wrong place. She quickly corrected her mistake and handed the letter back to Mr. Smith.
"Thank you," he said. "That's much better."
Day couldn't help but smile. Even though Mr. Smith was a bit of a tyrant, he had a way of making her laugh.
Chapter 2: The Coworker from Heaven
Not all coworkers are created equal. There are those who make our lives a living hell, and those who make us want to come to work every day.
One of Day's favorite coworkers was a woman named Mary. Mary was always cheerful and helpful. She was the kind of person who would always go the extra mile, even when she was feeling overwhelmed.
One day, Day was working on a particularly difficult project. She had been at it for hours and was starting to get frustrated. Mary came by her desk and asked if she needed any help.
"I'm just trying to finish this project," Day said. "But it's so complicated."
"Let me see," Mary said.
Mary looked at the project for a few minutes. Then she said, "I think I see what you're ng wrong."
Mary showed Day what she was ng wrong. Day followed Mary's instructions and was able to finish the project quickly and easily.
"Thank you so much," Day said. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"You're welcome," Mary said. "That's what I'm here for."
Chapter 3: The Office Chaos
No matter how organized you are, there will always be days when the office descends into chaos. From spilled coffee to broken printers, there's always something to keep you on your toes.
One of Day's most memorable experiences with office chaos was the time the coffee machine exploded.
It was a Monday morning, and the office was buzzing with activity. Day was making her usual pot of coffee when she heard a loud bang. She looked up and saw that the coffee machine had exploded. Coffee was spewing everywhere, and people were running around screaming.
Day didn't know what to do. She grabbed a towel and tried to clean up the mess. But the coffee was too hot, and she kept burning her hands.
Finally, the maintenance man came and fixed the machine. But by that time, the office was a complete disaster.
Day couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. After all, what's a secretary without a little chaos?
Being a secretary is a challenging but rewarding job. There are days when you'll want to pull your hair out, but there are also days when you'll laugh until your sides hurt. The Lighter Side of Your Secretarial Career celebrates the unique quirks and charms of office life. With wit and warmth, Doris Day reminds us that even in the most stressful of times, there's always room for laughter.
So if you're a secretary, or if you've ever worked in an office, then this book is for you. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will remind you that you're not alone.
