A Star is Born

Born Irving Lahrheim in New York City in 1895, Bert Lahr's journey towards comedic stardom began in unlikely circumstances. His parents, impoverished German immigrants, struggled to make ends meet, and young Bert often found himself entertaining the neighborhood children to escape the hardships of his home life.

Vaudeville and Broadway

Lahr's natural talent for comedy soon caught the attention of vaudeville impresarios, and by his early twenties, he was headlining his own act.
