William Lyon Mackenzie King was one of the most important and influential prime ministers in Canadian history. He led the country through two world wars and played a key role in the development of Canada's social safety net. King was a complex and controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he left a lasting mark on Canada.

Early Life and Career

William Lyon Mackenzie King was born in Berlin, Ontario, in 1874. His father, John King, was a lawyer and politician, and his mother, Isabel Grace Mackenzie, was a devout Presbyterian. King was a bright and ambitious child, and he excelled in his studies. He attended the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School, and he was called to the bar in 1897.

King began his political career in 1908, when he was elected to the House of Commons as the Liberal MP for North Waterloo. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party, and in 1919 he became the party's leader. King led the Liberals to victory in the 1921 federal election, and he became Prime Minister of Canada.

Prime Minister of Canada

King served as Prime Minister of Canada for a total of 22 years, making him the longest-serving prime minister in Canadian history. He led the country through two world wars and played a key role in the development of Canada's social safety net.

King was a strong supporter of Canadian autonomy, and he resisted pressure from the United States to enter the First World War. However, he eventually agreed to send Canadian troops to Europe, and he played a key role in the Allied victory.

After the war, King focused on domestic issues. He introduced a number of social reforms, including old age pensions, unemployment insurance, and health care. He also played a key role in the development of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

King led Canada into the Second World War in 1939. He again resisted pressure from the United States to enter the war, but he eventually agreed to send Canadian troops to Europe. King also played a key role in the Allied victory in the Second World War.

Later Life and Legacy

King retired as Prime Minister in 1948. He died in 1950 at the age of 76. King is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.

King was a complex and controversial figure. He was often accused of being indecisive and lacking in charisma. However, there is no doubt that he was a skilled politician and a dedicated public servant.
