Mae Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama, in 1956. She was always a curious child and loved to learn. She excelled in school and went on to attend Stanford University, where she earned a degree in chemical engineering. After graduating from Stanford, Jemison worked as a chemical engineer for several years before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming an astronaut.
In 1987, Jemison was selected to be part of the NASA astronaut training program. She completed the program in 1990 and became the first African American woman to travel into space. Jemison served on the crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour on a mission to study the Earth's ozone layer.
After her spaceflight, Jemison continued to work for NASA. She served as a mission specialist on two more Space Shuttle missions and was also the first African American woman to be inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Jemison retired from NASA in 1993 and went on to found the Jemison Group, a company that promotes science and technology education.
Mae Jemison is an inspiration to students of all ages. She shows that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in science, space, or the history of African Americans in the United States.
